Artist in Residence
Artist in Residence: Renee van Bavel
The Artist in Residence project at the Sachsenhausen Memorial aims to create new impulses in memorial work through the use of art.
The Berlin-based Dutch artist Renee van Bavel has been active as an artist in residence at the memorial since January 2022. She is known for her artwork "The Mirror of Peace", which was presented at the Venice Art Biennale in summer 2022.
"During my time at the Sachsenhausen Memorial, I would like to use different artistic formats to develop new ways of commemorating and create new forms with which we can bring the history of the site into the future in an accessible way."
Various art projects have already been developed and realised in the past year. For example, the film "I write your name" on the occasion of the Day of Remembrance for the Victims of the Nazi Regime on 27 January 2022, artistic interventions on the grounds and an audio walk with international participants of a summer camp. She has also developed new event formats such as the Gedenk.Feier on 18 September 2022 for the victims of the murder of homosexual prisoners. Renee van Bavel is part of the interdisciplinary team Revising the Exhibition of the Sachsenhausen Memorial.
The artist-in-residence's studio is located in the former "Industriehof" on the grounds of the memorial. If you would like to be kept up to date on Renee van Bavel's various projects, you are welcome to visit her website: www.reneevanbavel.com
Gedenk.Feier
On 18 September 2022, the Sachsenhausen Memorial held the memorial event “Gedenk.Feier” (Commemoration.Celebration). During this event, we commemorated the homosexual prisoners who died in Sachsenhausen concentration camp, combined with a celebration of gay and queer life today.
